Larry Bobko, a two-time stroke survivor, and his wife Teri have been making a difference in the lives of other stroke survivors for the past six years. Based in Grayslake, the couple has been participating in a phone-based peer support program where they share their experiences and provide guidance to patients who have recently had strokes at Northwestern Medicine Lake Forest Hospital.
Larry's first stroke occurred in 2006. Despite receiving immediate care, his recovery was slow. "I was completely paralyzed on my right side. I couldn’t move at all. I couldn’t talk, but then things started coming back with a lot of hard work and the grace of God,” Larry shared. His second stroke came in 2020, introducing new challenges such as residual weakness and occasional aphasia.
Following Larry's strokes, Teri assumed the role of caregiver. “It’s a challenge to be a caregiver, but it’s an honor,” she said. “After 53 years of marriage, I know that he would do this if it were me in need."
The couple got involved with the survivor-to-survivor program through Stroke Survivors Empowering Each Other (SSEEO), a nonprofit organization that provides advocacy, support, education and resources to stroke survivors and their families.
“Every stroke is unique, but there are a lot of similarities,” said Larry. “These calls help survivors understand they’re not alone.” During these calls, Larry discusses recognizing the signs of a stroke using the acronym B.E. F.A.S.T., following up with physicians and exercise routines.
Teri also connects with caregivers during these calls and encourages them to accept help from friends and family. Jennifer Cote from LFH accompanies the Bobkos during these calls to answer any clinical questions patients may have.
Most months see about 30 survivor-to-survivor calls made by the Bobkos who try to adjust their schedule according to patients' needs. They have worked with Cote to develop a script that evolves with recovering patients.
“I think that’s the real key to stroke recovery — connecting with others, sharing your story and finding your new normal," said Teri.
