Chicago Turns Turquoise for Lung Cancer Action Week

The American Lung Association is set to turn Chicago turquoise next week in honor of Lung Cancer Action Week. The organization aims to raise awareness of lung cancer and encourage residents to take action to combat the disease.

As part of the 10th-anniversary celebration of LUNG FORCE, a nationwide movement to end lung cancer, the Lung Association is organizing the Turquoise Takeover celebration from May 6-12. This initiative aims to unite Americans in the fight against lung disease by illuminating buildings and landmarks across the U.S. in turquoise, the signature color of LUNG FORCE.

"In 2024 alone, it is estimated that more than 9,400 Illinoisians will be diagnosed with lung cancer. We have seen incredible advancements in early diagnosis, treatment, and survivorship from lung cancer," shared Danielle Trojanek, Executive Director of the Lung Association.

In Chicago, several major landmarks and buildings, including the Willis Tower, The Merchandise Mart, the Wrigley Building, and the John Hancock Center, will be illuminated in turquoise to raise awareness. Additionally, a giveback campaign is in place throughout May to raise critical funds for lung disease, with jeweler Kendra Scott donating 20% of purchases made online or at select locations with a specific code.

The Lung Association's LUNG FORCE movement, established in 2014, has raised over $30 million for lung cancer research, with a commitment to expanding research by 286%. The organization is dedicated to ensuring fewer people are diagnosed with lung cancer and improving the quality of life for those living with the disease.

As part of Lung Cancer Action Week, the American Lung Association is urging people to take seven specific actions to help end lung cancer. With advancements in early detection and treatment, the survival rates for lung cancer have significantly increased in the last decade, offering hope to those affected by the disease.
