American Lung Association: New Carbon Pollution Standards for Power Plants Will Improve Health; 3 in 4 Voters Support Stricter Limits on Power Plant Carbon Emissions

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has introduced new regulations aimed at reducing carbon pollution from power plants. In response to this announcement, Harold Wimmer, President and CEO of the American Lung Association, emphasized the significance of these rules in combating climate change and improving public health. Wimmer stated, "These rules are an important step in reducing the carbon pollution that causes climate change."

Wimmer also highlighted the widespread support for stricter limits on carbon emissions from power plants, noting that "76% of voters support setting stricter limits on carbon emissions from new and existing power plants."

The American Lung Association's President underlined the health benefits of the new regulations, stating that they would result in significant reductions in harmful emissions. Wimmer mentioned that the rules would cut over a billion metric tons of carbon pollution and prevent at least 1,200 premature deaths in the year 2035 alone.

Expressing gratitude towards President Biden and EPA Administrator Regan for their efforts in finalizing these standards, Wimmer acknowledged that "today is a good day for public health."

Furthermore, Wimmer expressed the American Lung Association's commitment to working with the administration to address pollution from existing gas plants and strengthen measures to control greenhouse gas emissions. He also called on the EPA to update and enhance the National Ambient Air Quality Standards for ozone, emphasizing the importance of protecting the health of individuals, especially those with lung disease.

In conclusion, the new carbon pollution standards for power plants have been welcomed by the American Lung Association as a crucial step towards mitigating the impacts of climate change and improving public health.
