Wellness education specialist of Sharp Medical Centers: 'Stress eating is very common'

Erin Famulare, a wellness education specialist at Sharp Rees-Stealy Medical Centers, has shed light on the impact of stress on appetite. On April 9th, Famulare discussed how overeating can often serve as an emotional coping mechanism.

"You may reach out for a bag of chips or a chocolate bar as a way to deal with your emotions," said Famulare, according to SHARP. "Comfort foods may be screaming your name, and the same amount of food that you usually eat may not fill you up,” Famulare say. Stress eating is very common."

According to Sharp Health News, Famulare elaborated on how the act of reaching for a snack or a candy bar can be a response to stress experienced throughout the day. She explained that this pattern could ultimately lead to unhealthy weight gain, with cortisol being the primary hormone triggering these cues. Famulare characterized these as 'comfort foods,' explaining their allure after a stressful day. However, she also offered strategies for managing these emotions.

Sharp Health News reported that Famulare suggested mindfulness about food choices and meal timings as one way to combat stress-eating. She even recommended maintaining a planner with details of meals and the circumstances surrounding them. Another strategy she proposed was replacing typical instances of stress eating with activities such as walking, crafting, or socializing with friends. Lastly, she emphasized the importance of 'addressing the environment.' Making healthier food options readily available makes it easier to choose them over less healthy alternatives.

Sharp Health News also provided some background information on Famulare's career and interests. Currently working at Sharp, Famulare developed an interest in intuitive, healthy eating from a young age. As a wellness specialist, she witnessed firsthand the transformative effect of healthy eating during her college years. In addition to her work at Sharp, she runs an independent blog focusing on nutrition through videos and recipes.
