Michel Barsoum: 'A murmur could indicate a serious heart problem'

Michel Barsoum, a cardiologist specialist at Mayo Clinic, has emphasized the potential for heart murmurs to be overlooked. "Factors causing heart murmurs may be overlooked," he said, advising that it might be challenging to detect a personal murmur but underlining the importance of understanding the associated risks.

"The murmur may disappear as quickly as it comes if it has a temporary cause," said Barsoum, according to Mayo Clinic News Network. "However, a murmur also could be persistent and loud, easily heard, and sound like a churning mill wheel or cooing seagull. Once the cause of a heart murmur has been found, some people will need repeated evaluation over the years,"

According to Mayo Clinic, a heart murmur can manifest in various forms. It can be temporary or persistent and may present as either loud or quiet. The clinic noted that these murmurs could arise from many different circumstances such as rapid growth, during pregnancy, and more. However, multiple factors contribute to this issue. Often, it is caused by a heart valve problem or simply a hole in the heart. Murmurs may also occur due to high blood flow in people who have fever.

Mayo Clinic also outlined multiple symptoms of murmurs which include fainting, fever, chest pain, and shortness of breath. Diagnosing murmurs can be achieved through various mechanisms; most often they are discovered during physical exams intended for other purposes. The significance of the murmurs can be measured by several factors including volume, location, pitch, and timing.
