A patient recently shared her experience of having a septoplasty procedure performed in the office at Capitol Breathe Free Sinus and Allergy Centers to treat a severely deviated septum, asthma and breathing issues.
In an interview, patient Patrice said she had suffered from a deviated septum for a while, having problems with her nose and throat since childhood. She's had lifelong problems with her throat as well, being diagnosed with asthma. Because she was unaware of the problems it was causing, she didn't realize how her quality of life was affected until she visited Capitol Breathe Free. She said it was an "eye-opening" experience and made her realize how a septoplasty could "significantly improve quality of life."
A septoplasty is a "surgical procedure to straighten the bone and cartilage dividing the space between your two nostrils," according to the Mayo Clinic. Patients who suffer from a deviated septum, as Patrice did, can experience breathing issues and face an increased risk of sinus infections. A septoplasty allows for easier breathing and relief from a crooked septum.
Patrice said the experience was efficient and that she was happy with Dr. Stephen Bane, who completed the procedure. According to Capitol Breathe Free's website, Dr. Bane trained in general surgery in New York at NYU and Bellevue Hospitals. He served in the U.S. Navy as a flight surgeon and was named one of Northern Virginia Magazine’s Top Doctors 2020.
Patrice said that many patients might think they need a rhinoplasty to treat a deviated septum, but at Capitol Breathe Free, she was treated quickly without the need for extensive surgery.
"Dr. Bane was able to fix my deviated septum, and I was out within an hour," Patrice said. "It was a really simple process... and I wholeheartedly recommend the ENT." She also said that recovery time was very minimal and that she was fully recovered within four weeks with no side effects.
Capitol Breathe Free is also able to perform X-rays in the office and showed Patrice how her septum differed from a healthy one. A septoplasty procedure can also be performed in the office without requiring a trip to the hospital.
Patrice said that she was very grateful for the "exceptional staff" who patiently answered any follow-up questions that she had and for helping her through the recovery process. She also said that she appreciated that staff members didn't pressure her to make any decisions.
"I feel like I can take a more full breath, which is refreshing," Patrice said. "That's not something I could do before."
