Hochul signs legislation to 'expand access to health care and enhance services for all New Yorkers'

The state of New York is bolstering its health management with a new legislative package.

Gov. Kathy Hochul (D) has recently signed measures that are focused on enhancing health care services.

“After the unprecedented strain the pandemic placed on our health care system, it is crucial that we take steps to ensure we are better prepared in the future,” Hochul said, according to the New York State website. “This legislation will allow New York to have a stronger response to future crises, and I am proud to sign these bills into law to expand access to health care and enhance services for all New Yorkers.”

One piece of legislation will allow for more plasma centers to open around the state and ensure greater access to plasma. "Plasma is a vital resource in treating disease, and this legislation expands access for donation," the New York State website says.

The second piece of legislation will require the State Education Department to collect information about the professional practices of health care workers that will provide a more accurate outlook of workforce demands in New York state.

The third piece of legislation will direct the translation of patients’ rights into the most common non-English languages in nursing homes and also requires the display of contact information for New York State’s Long-Term Ombudsman Program. "This program was established as part of the Older Americans Act and advocates for residents by investigating complaints made," the New York State website explains.
