Medical experts stress importance of diagnosis accuracy, cite lessons learned by pandemic

The COVID-19 pandemic has presented multiple challenges in the health care system that many medical experts feel we can learn from as we seek to develop a system that is more prepared for the needs of the 21st century.

Many medical experts are citing the need to provide a correct diagnosis more frequently, according to an Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality press release. It has been made clear, in part by the pandemic, that our ability to diagnosis will still need to come a long way and there are many questions left unanswered about diagnosis procedures during the pandemic.

It is estimated that at least 12 million people annually are affected by diagnosis errors, according to the press release. About a third of these will experience serious harm as a result.

The cost of the diagnosis issues cost the health care system an estimated $100 billion annually. Medical professionals are under an enormous amount of stress, to be sure. Still, many medical experts around the world are pushing for better results, especially in times of global crisis such as the COVID-19 pandemic.
