Mayo Clinic: Public should take precautions for flu season amid pandemic

With the combination of flu season and the COVID-19 pandemic, individuals need to not forget to take precautions and preparations to be prepared for the flu season.

Dr. Jeff Green, a family medicine provider at the Mayo Clinic Health System, recently addressed some of the ways people can be prepared for flu season during the coronavirus pandemic, according to a post on the Mayo Clinic’s website.

Flu season in the U.S. usually peaks between January and February, and can result in symptoms severe enough to warrant hospitalization, Green wrote. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control estimate that tens of thousands of people die each year from the flu.

As a pathogen that can be transmitted through airborne droplets, the flu is believed to be transferred primarily by infected individuals coughing, sneezing or even speaking, Green wrote.

It is believed that physical contact with objects or people is a less common means by which the virus is passed on, Green wrote.
