Global Future Council on Longevity examines pitfalls of an aging population in the face of COVID-19

A recent report from the Global Future Council on Longevity has offered new perspectives on the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the eldest members of society, and the way in which communities can address that impact.

The National Academy of Medicine posted about the results from the report, which includes an examination of ageism both in response to the coronavirus and how it affect the response to the pandemic, the impacts of isolation on vulnerable populations during the pandemic, home- and community-based care, the situation of long-term care facilities such as nursing homes, the variation in the impact of COVID-19 realities on elderly populations compared based on income levels in low- and middle-income countries.

The report itself noted that the coronavirus, which has proven to be most deadly among older age groups, is greeted by a global population that is increasingly older than in previous generations. This is further complicated by the fact many people are living longer.
