Horizon Pharma launches initiative to raise awareness of people affected by rare diseases

Horizon Pharma plc has launched RAREis, which aims to raise the voices, experiences and faces of people living with rare diseases.

The RAREis initiative is an addition to Horizon’s resources and programs to support those in the rare disease community. The launch correlates with Rare Disease Day, which is observed around the world in recognition of the nearly 350 million people worldwide suffer from a rare disease.

The campaign effectively uses Instagram to showcase pictures of people affected by a rare disease and capture elements of their caregiver, patient and advocate experiences.

A condition is considered rare when it is diagnosed in less than 200,000 people in the United States. Other countries use a different model based on population. There are nearly 7,000 types of rare diseases. However, only about 5 percent are treatable, according to a press release from Horizon.

Horizon makes 11 medicines through its rheumatology, orphan and primary care units. The company makes those drugs available for diseases that affect as few as 2,000 people worldwide and only 500 in the United States.
