Christie names Murphy to New Jersey spinal cord board

New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie recently appointed Carolann Murphy to the state’s Commission on Spinal Cord Research for a three-year term, leveraging her three-decade clinical career for the benefit of furthering research via various institutions.

Murphy obtained her Physician Associate degree from Yale University and became a medical communications specialist, serving as assistant editor for the Journal of Spinal Cord Medicine and communications manager at Kessler Foundation, a public charity supporting those with disabilities located in West Orange, New Jersey.

As part of her job, Murphy publicizes results of investigative work accomplished by the Northern New Jersey Spinal Cord Injury System, one of the 14 similar programs that are federally funded.

"Through my work, I have developed a deep understanding of the nature of spinal cord injury and its impact on individuals, caregivers and society,” Murphy said. “Impaired mobility is just the most evident effect. Research needs to address the spectrum of challenges that adversely affect the quality of life, including mobility, medical complications and barriers to employment, recreation and transportation.”

The Commission on Spinal Cord Research was established in 1999 to administer projects at New Jersey research institutions.

“The advances achieved in our state have the potential to improve quality of life for all people with SCI, and I am pleased to contribute to that effort,” Murphy said.
