Amgen supports Blood Cancer Awareness Month

To recognize Blood Cancer Awareness Month, Amgen Inc. recently honored patients who have been affected by blood cancer as well as scientists, researchers, nurses, physicians and caregivers.

For 2016, Amgen is a National Sponsor of the Light the Night Walk, organized by the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. This walk is an evening event that increases funding as well as awareness for treatment and research concerning blood cancer.

Approximately 171,550 people have received a diagnosis of blood cancer in the U.S. just this year. There are over 1.2 million people living in the U.S. with lymphoma, leukemia or myeloma, or who are in remission of these diseases.

Scientists believe that blood cancer usually starts in the bone marrow. It stops blood from functioning normally, such as being able to stop major bleeding and fight against infections.

Blood cancer treatments and solutions have seen major advances during the last several years. Amgen is a leader in researching this disease and focusing on finding valuable solutions for patients who have challenging blood cancers.

Blood Cancer Awareness Month is designed to improve awareness of the disease. Many patients have joined clinical trials to further research for solutions to the illness. Thanks to these patients and countless physicians, researchers and nurses, science has made progress in fighting against blood cancer in the U.S.
