Brain tumor researchers receive 16 investment grants

The American Brain Tumor Association (ABTA) recently awarded 16 grants as investments for cutting-edge brain tumor research.

These grants represent just a portion of the $30 million that the ABTA has awarded since its founding; funds have been awarded to scientists around the world. The goal is to use the organization’s highly competitive review process to develop talented investigators who could change how modern people understand the causes, effects, treatment and diagnosis of brain tumors.

For funded projects in 2016, researchers are focusing on possible new therapies, immunotherapy, new imaging approaches and metastatic disease.

"Our new grant recipients hail from a variety of institutions and backgrounds to propel the brain tumor research field forward," Dr. Nicole Willmarth, chief science officer of the ABTA, said. "We are excited to support these innovative projects that bring together promising and novel areas of science to accelerate our understanding of brain tumors."

ABTA grants feature the 2016-2018 Basic Research Fellowships, the 2016-2017 Discovery Grants and the 2016 Medical Student Summer Fellowships. Recipients underwent a competitive, multi-step review process established on scientific merit, alignment with the mission of ABTA and possibilities for impacting the world.
