AHA announces top national volunteer leaders

The American Heart Association (AHA), the top voluntary health organization against cardiovascular disease, recently named Alvin Royse and Steven Houser as its two top national volunteer leaders from 2016 to 2017.

Royse, a retired senior partner from a national accounting firm in California, and Houser -- who is a senior associate dean of research at Philadelphia’s Temple University -- will serve in these positions starting on July 1. Royse will be the chairman, and Houser will be the president.

Royse is beginning the second part of his two-year term as chairman. He is in charge of public relations, business affairs and fundraising.

In his role as president, Houser will handle scientific, medical and public health issues. He will also be the chief volunteer medical and scientific officer, providing expertise as needed.

The AHA is dedicated to saving lives. The top killer in the U.S. is heart disease, and the fifth leading cause of death is stroke. The AHA organizes millions of volunteers to finance novel research. The research is geared toward finding lifesaving tools and spreading information about the prevention and treatment of these sicknesses.

The AHA is based in Dallas and is the biggest, oldest voluntary organization in the U.S. that is solely focused on fighting strokes and heart disease.
