Easterseals introduces 2016 Outstanding Advocate Award recipients

At the Easterseals Advocacy Summit, Easterseals leaders announced the 12 congressmen and women who are the recipients of the 2016 Outstanding Advocate Award.

The purpose of the Outstanding Advocate Award is to recognize public officials who show excellent leadership as well as legislative support to help people who have disabilities.

The first Easterseals award was given in 1991, honoring the ongoing efforts of appointed and elected leaders who had assisted or enabled Easterseals to make progress in its goals of helping disabled persons.

“Our government provides an essential foundation for Easterseals’ delivery of critically important services for people with disabilities,” Randy Rutta, president and CEO of Easterseals, said. “We rely on government funding so our nationwide network of 74 affiliates can provide assistance to local communities in need of services, including employment and transportation accessibility for people with disabilities, veterans and military families. We salute these 12 elected officials for their continued support and leadership.”

Recipients include Sen. Kelly Ayotte (R-NH) and Reps. G.K. Butterfield (D-NC), Mike Quigley (D-IL) and Frank LoBiondo (R-NJ). State awardees are Gov. Scott Walker (R-WI), State Sens. Judith Zaffirini (D-TX), Rene Garcia (R-FL), Holly Mitchell (D-CA), Dorothy Hukill (R-FL) and Mary Caferro (D-MT), as well as Reps. David Price (D-NC) and Steve Cohen (D-TN).
