Congress approves largest cancer research budget increase in over a decade

Members of the U.S. Congress recently approved a budget increase for cancer research -- the largest increase in over 10 years.

"This new funding will play a pivotal role in our ability to discover new cures and find new ways to prevent and treat cancer," American Cancer Society's Cancer Action Network (ACS CAN) representatives said. "This is a historic victory in fighting cancer, and it happened because of the tireless efforts of our ACS CAN volunteers sharing their experiences with cancer and spreading the message that we are all just one degree away from cancer."

ACS CAN representatives cited the organization's #OneDegree campaign as playing an integral part in the passage of the budget increase.

"The impacts were felt throughout the halls of Congress and across the nation," they said. "Our volunteers made phone calls, participated in local events, attended town hall meetings. Many even came to Washington, D.C., for our annual lobby day to meet directly with their members of Congress."
