Dermatologist at Ohio State Medical Center: 'If you’re experiencing hair loss, PRP may be able to help'

Desmond Shipp, a Dermatologist at Ohio State Wexner Medical Center, stated that Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) might be beneficial for individuals experiencing hair loss. Despite the lack of insurance coverage for PRP, it yields tangible results.

"Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is the portion of plasma derived from whole blood, with higher platelet concentration compared to the baseline," said Shipp, Dermatologist, Associate Professor, Director of Cosmetic Dermatology. "PRP has been shown to help with hair transplant survival by pretreating areas prior to harvesting."

According to Ohio State News, PRP is derived from whole blood and boasts a higher concentration compared to other components. Although PRP has applications beyond hair loss treatment, such as providing pain relief from cosmetic procedures, its primary use lies in combating hair loss. It enhances blood flow and follicle turnover, potentially stimulating hair cells. The duration of the treatment can range between three to six months. However, potential side effects include active skin lesions around injection sites, systemic diseases that alter normal platelet function, and infections.

Ohio State News also reported that the injection of PRP could cause discomfort at the site of application. Standard methods for alleviating this pain include using ice or taking pain relievers. Additionally, PRP can effectively aid in treating vitiligo, skin rejuvenation, melasma, and enhanced fat grafting. Following the induction phase, ongoing therapy is required.

According to Ohio State University records, Shipp completed his medical education at the University of Toledo College of Medicine in Toledo, OH. He conducts tests on various procedures including blepharoplasty, pulsed radiofrequency treatment and dermatologic surgical procedures. Shipp claims to specialize in cosmetic dermatology with research focusing on advancements in liposuction and laser therapy among other areas. He prides himself on delivering the highest level of patient satisfaction through his work in dermatology.
