Doctor of Mayo Clinic: 'Prevention of peripheral artery disease is always the best treatment'

Dr. Michel Barsoum, a Cardiology specialist at Mayo Clinic University, has issued a warning about the effects and causes of diseases related to the arterial system. Symptoms can vary but are often linked to family history and lifestyle.

"Just like coronary arteries, peripheral arteries can become diseased," said Barsoum, Cardiologist specialist at Mayo Clinic university, according to Mayo Clinic News Network. "f you experience any of these symptoms, make an appointment with a vascular medicine specialist, who will conduct a physical exam and record your health history. Quit smoking, eat a heart-healthy diet, exercise regularly, keep your blood sugar in check if you have diabetes, maintain a healthy weight, and manage your blood pressure and cholesterol levels."

According to Mayo Clinic, peripheral artery disease (PAD) is a condition that involves the narrowing of arteries responsible for transporting blood to the arms, legs, and other parts of the body. Barsoum explains that this condition results in reduced blood flow due to a buildup in cell walls. Individuals who smoke or have diabetes are among those at risk for this disease. The symptoms may include aching or cramping while performing manual tasks, hair loss, and changes in body parts such as arms and legs.

Mayo Clinic reports that Barsoum completed his education at the University of Cairo-Egypt. His areas of interest include aneurysms, valve and coronary artery diseases, varicose veins, and blood clots. Currently serving at Chippewa Falls in Wisconsin, Barsoum holds certifications in cardiology, vascular ultrasounds, internal medicine among others. He completed his residency at Sanford School of Medicine and the University of South Dakota.
