Dr. Capo speaks at AAO-HNSF conference on office-based surgery: 'It gives us the opportunity to care for more patients in a way we know will be helpful for them'

Dr. Joseph Capo of Capo Nose & Sinus Center recently spoke at the The American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery annual meeting on a panel discussing the mastery of office-based sinus and rhinitis surgery. During the panel, experts shared their experience with in-office procedures and how they're making it easier for sinusitis patients to receive treatment.

During the conference, the panel mentioned that the primary benefits of in-office procedures are that a patient can avoid general anesthesia, it's more convenient, there's less recovery time, and many patients prefer it. They noted in-office procedures not only help with sinus issues but also the other health issues that arise from sinusitis.

"We all know the benefits of endoscopic sinus surgery in patients who have chronic disease," Dr. Capo said at the meeting. "I found that for patients that required an intervention, when you tell patients they have to go into the operating room under general anesthesia, they're a little hesitant about having a real surgery in the OR and all the risks associated with it. When I was able to offer, even patients with more complex diseases, something in the office under local anesthesia, more of them were willing to proceed with that path, and it gives us the opportunity to care for more patients in a way we know will be helpful for them. At this point, I'm handling probably close to 95% of my cases in the office."

According to Capo's website, the clinic is furnished with high-quality surgical equipment, including neuronavigation, which is considered the gold standard for sinus surgery and is typically found only in traditional surgical operating rooms.

Capo Nose & Sinus Center offers several different types of in-office procedures. According to the website, these are listed as Clarifix, Latera, Septoplasty, and Balloon Sinuplasty. Whether a patient is dealing with nasal blockages, nasal valve collapse, a deviated septum, chronic sinusitis, or another nasal issue, there's a high chance that these conditions can be treated with minimum invasiveness right in the office.

Dr. Capo finished a five-year residency in otolaryngology—head and neck surgery—at Mount Sinai Hospital in Manhattan, with a primary emphasis on caring for individuals suffering from sinus and nasal disorders. According to Capo's website, he has performed over 1000 sinus procedures within an office environment.
