Amaranth Diabetes Foundation celebrates donations milestone for diabetes research

Officials with the Amaranth Diabetes Foundation (ADF), which is the philanthropic charity of the Order of the Amaranth, recently reached $15 million in donations to the American Diabetes Association Research Foundation since starting in 1979.

Donations for 2016 amount to $542,983 so far. This marks 37 years of funding support from the ADF to research grants for the American Diabetes Association (ADA).

"One hundred percent of what we raise goes directly to diabetes research," Amaranth Supreme Royal Matron Dianne Dean said. "We need to support research because diabetes affects so many parts of the body. I devote all of my time to raising funds for research. It's a life of service."

This is the second year that the ADF has joined a matching-gift fundraising campaign dedicated to helping the ADA with its research goals. This year’s fundraising campaign surpassed $350,000.

Other fundraising events include golf tournaments, auctions, baked goods sales, contests, retail store collections, concerts and special activities.

"Diabetes has touched almost every Amaranth member in one way or another," Elizabeth Herbolsheimer, ADF president, said. "We have members who have diabetes, and members with children, grandchildren and loved ones with diabetes. The prevalence of diabetes motivates our nationwide fundraisers on a personal level."

The ADF will formally present the donation at the Order of the Amaranth’s 2016 Supreme Assembly on July 26.
