One Brave Idea names 10 leading finalists

Organizers of the One Brave Idea research funding opportunity recently announced the 10 finalists who have been chosen for the last round of the competition, which gives the winner $75 million for research.

The purpose of the competition is to find a team and a leader to responsibly use the grant to discover and develop a cure for coronary heart disease as well as the illness’s severe consequences.

Statistics show that cardiovascular diseases are the top cause of death around the world: each year, an estimated 17 million people die from cardiovascular diseases. This means that one out of every three deaths around the world are because of this illness. Coronary heart disease kills over seven million people each year.

The competition held an application period for one month. During that time, hundreds of applicants from around the world sent their information to One Brave Idea.

The organizers -- from Verily, the America Heart Association and AstraZeneca -- have chosen the 10 finalists. These finalists will be part of face-to-face interviews, which are scheduled for June this year. Later this summer, the organizers will choose the winner of the research funding opportunity.

This funding event is a new method for finding solutions for worldwide health concerns. It will be the largest one-time research investment against coronary heart disease.
