Charlotte Turns Turquoise for Lung Cancer Action Week

The American Lung Association in North Carolina is set to turn Charlotte turquoise next week to raise awareness of lung cancer and urge residents to take action against the disease. The initiative is part of the 10th-anniversary celebration of LUNG FORCE, a nationwide movement to combat lung cancer.

Markus Hill, chair of the Lung Association’s North Carolina Board, highlighted the importance of the upcoming Lung Cancer Action Week, stating, "In 2024 alone, it is estimated that nearly 9,000 people in North Carolina will be diagnosed with lung cancer. But there is hope. We have seen incredible advancements in early diagnosis, treatment and survivorship from lung cancer. In fact, the five-year survival rate has increased by over 50% in the past decade."

The annual event aims to unite Americans in the fight against lung cancer by illuminating buildings and landmarks in turquoise, the signature color of LUNG FORCE. Mayor Vi Lyles has issued a proclamation for Lung Cancer Action Week in Charlotte, where the skyline will be illuminated turquoise on May 9.

LUNG FORCE, through education, advocacy, and research, is striving to reduce lung cancer diagnoses and improve the quality of life for those affected by the disease. Since its inception in 2014, LUNG FORCE has raised over $30 million for lung cancer research, with a 286% increase in research commitment.

The American Lung Association has outlined seven actions individuals can take to contribute to the efforts to end lung cancer, emphasizing the progress made in early detection and treatment options for the disease.

As lung cancer remains a leading cause of cancer-related deaths, the increased survival rates over the past decade offer hope for progress in combating the illness. Those interested in supporting Lung Cancer Action Week can visit LUNGFORCE.org to learn more about getting involved in the campaign.
