Atlanta Turns Turquoise for Lung Cancer Action Week

The American Lung Association in Georgia is gearing up to turn Atlanta turquoise in an effort to raise awareness about lung cancer and urge residents to take action to combat the disease. The upcoming Lung Cancer Action Week and Turquoise Takeover celebration, scheduled from May 6 to May 12, aims to unite Americans in the fight against lung cancer.

Colby Jones, a member of the Lung Association’s Georgia Local Leadership Board, expressed the importance of the initiative, stating, “In 2024 alone, it is estimated that more than 7,300 Georgians will be diagnosed with lung cancer. But there is hope. We have seen incredible advancements in early diagnosis, treatment and survivorship from lung cancer. In fact, the five-year survival rate has increased by over 50% in the past decade.”

As part of the event, significant landmarks and buildings in Atlanta, including Promenade Tower, 191 Peachtree Tower, and Walton Properties, will be illuminated in turquoise. The Georgia General Assembly has also shown support by adopting a privileged resolution commending the Lung Association on its 120th anniversary, with Representative Debbie Buckner sponsoring the resolution, HR 1620.

LUNG FORCE, a nationwide movement initiated by the Lung Association, is dedicated to reducing the number of lung cancer diagnoses and improving the quality of life for those affected by the disease. Since its inception, LUNG FORCE has raised over $30 million for lung cancer research, with a significant increase in research commitment by 286%.

The article emphasizes the importance of early detection and advancements in research, which have led to a notable increase in lung cancer survival rates over the past decade. Notable progress has been made in the field, with over 50 new lung cancer treatments approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration since 2016.
