South Florida Turns Turquoise for Lung Cancer Action Week

The American Lung Association in Florida is gearing up to turn South Florida turquoise next week to raise awareness of lung cancer and urge residents to take action to combat the disease. The initiative is part of the annual Lung Cancer Action Week and Turquoise Takeover celebration from May 6-12, aimed at uniting Americans in the fight against lung cancer.

Andrea Eastaugh, a member of the Lung Association’s South Florida Local Leadership Board, emphasized the importance of raising awareness and funds for lung cancer, stating, “In 2024 alone, it is estimated that more than 18,500 Floridians will be diagnosed with lung cancer. But there is hope. We have seen incredible advancements in early diagnosis, treatment and survivorship from lung cancer. In fact, the five-year survival rate has increased by over 50% in the past decade.”

To encourage community involvement, all donations made to the American Lung Association in South Florida until June 30 will be matched 1:1 up to $20,000 by local sponsors. This Matching Gift Challenge aims to inspire individuals to support patients living with lung cancer and their families.

The national American Lung Association is urging people to take seven actions this week to contribute to the efforts to end lung cancer. Lung cancer, the leading cause of cancer deaths, sees a new diagnosis every two minutes. However, advancements in early detection through screening and research have led to a significant increase in survival rates over the past decade.

Through its LUNG FORCE initiative, the American Lung Association has raised over $30 million for vital lung cancer research since 2014, increasing its research commitment by 286%. The organization continues its mission to reduce lung cancer diagnoses and improve the quality of life for those living with the disease.

As part of the Turquoise Takeover Challenge, local sponsors such as Tito’s Handmade Vodka, We Florida Financial, Memorial Cancer Institute, Parents Choice Medical Daycare, Tarpon River Brewing, and Florida Health are supporting the initiative. The National Corporate Team Partner, Kindred Hospitals, is also recognized for its contribution to the cause.

Individuals interested in participating in Lung Cancer Action Week and supporting the fight against lung cancer are encouraged to visit TurquoiseTakeoverChallenge.org for more information on how to get involved.
