American Lung Association Encourages Action During Lung Cancer Action Week

The American Lung Association is currently in the midst of raising awareness for lung cancer and urging Louisiana residents to take action to combat the disease. This initiative is part of the annual Lung Cancer Action Week and Turquoise Takeover celebration, which runs from May 6 to May 12.

Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry has officially proclaimed Lung Cancer Action Week throughout the state, encouraging all residents to educate themselves about lung cancer, its risk factors, early detection, and take proactive steps.

Eric Weinzettle, Director of Advocacy for the American Lung Association, emphasized the importance of the community's involvement in combating lung cancer, stating, "Raising awareness and funds for lung cancer is more important than ever. We encourage our community to get involved in Turquoise Takeover."

The year 2024 marks the 10th anniversary of the American Lung Association's LUNG FORCE movement, dedicated to ending lung cancer through education, advocacy, and research. Over the past decade, significant progress has been made, with a more than 50% increase in the five-year survival rate for lung cancer patients.

Lung cancer remains the leading cause of cancer-related deaths, but advancements in early detection and research have led to a positive shift in survival rates. Improved lung cancer screening and the approval of over 50 new treatments by the FDA since 2016 have contributed to this encouraging trend.
