McSweeney named assistant dean of admissions for UW medical program

University of Wisconsin (UW) alumna and faculty member Dr. Mary McSweeney recently took over as assistant dean of admissions for the university's medical program.

Prior to taking on the assistant dean position, McSweeney was a cardiac anesthesiologist at UW Health and an associate professor at UW’s School of Medicine and Public Health. McSweeney graduated from that same program, when it was known as the Medical School, and began her career at UW in 1998, according to a news announcement.

She will continue to work with cardiac patients on a limited basis as she recruits students for the program. McSweeney said she will rely on the already excellent work of the school’s admissions staff, with whom she is familiar because of her seat on the admissions committee.

Of particular focus for McSweeney will be recruiting students from underrepresented groups, including minority candidates and those from poorer and rural areas of Wisconsin, the release said.

McSweeney said she is excited to continue to work with the UW school and hospital system in a role that will allow her to make a difference to the program that launched her career.
