NIH task force to develop nutrition strategy plan

Leaders with the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Nutrition Research Task Force (NRTF) have decided to create the first nutrition strategy plan to complement other NIH research efforts against conditions and diseases that are affected by nutrition.

The goal is to research nutrition for the upcoming decade. To do this, the NRTF will use experts from a variety of fields because nutrition impacts many diseases: cancer, diabetes, heart disease, obesity, normal development and overall health.

With this strategic plan, the NIH will be able to conduct research to detect potential gaps and opportunities that will promote interdisciplinary work. That way, interdisciplinary researchers can collaborate to reach their nutrition goals.

In addition to this, researchers will seek feedback about the plan’s development and related efforts. They will ask opinions from federal agencies, the public, professional associations, and scientific organizations and communities.

This novel strategic plan will be fully developed during the next two years. It will highlight innovative, cross-cutting opportunities to advance nutrition research from training to basic science to experimental design.

A senior leadership team will handle the application of the research.
