Government Accountability Office publishes report on FDA security program

The Government Accountability Office (GAO) recently released a report about the security and protection of public health and industry information at the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

It is crucial for the FDA to maintain the safety of its public health information. In the August 2016 report, the GAO provided recommendations to improve the organization’s security.

Since then, the FDA has made it a goal to quickly resolve the problems that the GAO indicated. The organization has already fixed 80 percent of the program concerns and 61 percent of its technical issues.

The FDA intends to finish the last three program recommendations in the upcoming months. Only a few technical recommendations are left to complete, which will be done within the next year.

In addition, the FDA has stated that it plans to further improve its cybersecurity strategies as well as procedures. The goal is to guarantee that information security systems offer adequate protection for public health information and industry data. The program must provide continual, long-term security.

To further support the endeavor, the FDA has hired industry-leading experts to create and implement timely action plans. Experts will also create project management activities and programs to resolve recommendations outlined in the GAO report.
