Small health businesses to join NIH funding discussion

Small businesses involved in commercializing health-related technologies for life science or medical industries have been invited to the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) and Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) conference to learn more about funding.

This is the 18th Annual HHS SBIR/STTR Conference, called "Shining a Light on Small Business Innovation." The organizers expect approximately 800 participants from across the U.S. to attend the conference, which will take place in Orlando, Florida, later this fall.

Over $870 million in federal financing is currently available to these small businesses. The funds could help participating businesses take their innovations and ideas to the next level.

One of the goals of the programs under SBIR and STTR is to promote participation in entrepreneurship and innovation, particularly from women as well as socially and economically disadvantaged individuals. Opening the funding to other small businesses will help the programs achieve these goals.

“This flagship SBIR/STTR event provides the chance for entrepreneurs and researchers to meet one on one with federal representatives, network with each other and learn how the National Institutes of Health helps small businesses forge new relationships that can help bring technologies and discoveries to market,” Dr. Matthew Portnoy, NIH SBIR/STTR program coordinator, said. “We are hoping businesses take advantage of this opportunity and register to attend the conference.”

The event has the State University System of Florida and the University of Central Florida in Orlando as its co-hosts.
