NAMI announces Stigmafree Company launch

Leaders from the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) recently started Stigmafree Company as a new initiative to emphasize, challenge and promote the company’s culture -- to be caring and focused on mental health.

The initiative currently has seven companies involved in the idea, which include EY, Coty, Kenneth Cole Productions, FOX Sports, Philosophy, Participant Media and Wear Your Label.

Research shows that untreated mental health conditions drastically affect companies, with effects ranging from lower morale to reduce productivity from employees. Eight out of 10 of the company’s employees report that stigma and shame stopped them from asking for help with their mental health condition.

Additionally, mental health is an economic concern that costs approximately $200 billion in lost earnings every year.

“Nearly 60 million Americans are affected by mental illness and they often encounter stigma, or invisible barriers to acceptance and understanding, including in the workplace,” Mary Giliberti, CEO of NAMI, said. “This is something we need to change together. NAMI is thrilled to have these seven businesses partner with us as Stigmafree companies and commit to joining us in our fight to end the stigma of mental illness through education, increased awareness and social action.”

All of the companies are dedicated to helping Stigmafree partners stop the negative associations related to mental health issues.
