State insurance to require increased access to affordable autism care

Autism Speaks recently released a statement responding to the positive findings related to state insurance legislation and emphasizing the necessity of continuing to overcome the remaining barriers in autism care.

Autism Speaks has been integral in furthering legislation for better insurance coverage concerning autism-related health concerns. Now, 44 states provide insurance coverage for autism health concerns.

Current state requirements ask commercial health plans to include service costs for children who have autism. Thanks to this, more children are able to receive autism diagnoses and treatments; previously, many health insurance plans didn’t include costs connected to autism care.

The researchers also said that the total of children receiving diagnoses and treatments for autism continues to rise as states begin to require the cost coverage. There has been a 10 percent increase during the first 12 months of the requirements. Now there is an 18 percent increase over a period of three years.

Despite these figures, the total number of children who receive diagnoses and care remains under the approximated prevalence of autism in the U.S. Unfortunately, however, there are still many families who cannot find affordable autism coverage and services.

Autism Speaks supports insurance that covers the cost of autism services. Its statement highlights the autism insurance requirements that are important to guaranteeing that each person with autism receives proper care.
