Roundtable discussion to focus on risk, prevention of concussions

A roundtable discussion focused on concussions has been rescheduled and will now take place at 2 p.m. on March 14.

The roundtable is part of the House Energy and Commerce Committee's concussion review initiative, which is being overseen by Rep. Fred Upton (R-MI), chair of the House Energy and Commerce Committee, and Tim Murphy (R-PA), chairman of the Oversight and Investigations Subcommittee.

Upton and Murphy will lead the roundtable.

“The goal of this review is to advance the conversation beyond headlines and traditional boundaries to make a real difference for families across the country,” they said in a statement. “This roundtable will bring together experts on head trauma, including the public health, military, athletic and research communities. We want to explore what is known -- and not known -- about concussions and how the research community is working to meet these challenges. At the end of the day, we want to identify opportunities to achieve meaningful progress in our ability to diagnose and treat concussions.”

The lawmakers added that quick solutions do not exist for head injury prevention and said they look forward to further discussion.
