Pfizer doubles allowable income for RxPathways patient assistance program

For some patients, paying the necessary out-of-pocket costs for prescription medications can be difficult, if not impossible. To help those patients, pharmaceutical company Pfizer has doubled the allowable income level for its Pfizer RxPathways patient assistance program, opening it up to many more people who can take advantage of the more than 40 prescription medications the company offers free of charge.

From 2010 to 2014, 2.5 million patients have benefited from the program, filling over 30 million prescriptions for Pfizer products.

Allowed income levels for the program are $47,080 annually for a single person and $97,000 for a family of four. The program is available to people with and without insurance.

"We have listened to patients and acted quickly to significantly expand the eligibility of our patient assistance programs," Sally Susman, Pfizer's executive vice president of corporate affairs, said. "While patient assistance is not a permanent solution, it is a necessary step for helping to solve some of the high co-pay issues that some patients face. The real solution is to have a system that provides patients with access to innovative new treatments their doctors’ prescribe and insurance plans with good coverage.”

RxPathways can also provide uninsured patients with 35 to 50 percent savings on Pfizer medications; counseling programs to make sure patients are put into the right Pfizer assistance programs; insurance counseling; co-pay cards for insured patients; and referrals to other appropriate resources.
